Strengthening Security and Trust in Software Supply Chain: Why SBOM, SLSA, and Sigstore are the Future of Software Engineering

The Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), Supply Chain Levels for Software Artifacts (SLSA), and Sigstore are open-source standards related to ensuring the security of software supply chains. SBOM is a list of software components used to build an application or system. It provides visibility into the software components and their dependencies, which can help identify vulnerabilities and manage risks in the software supply chain. SLSA is a framework for software supply chain security that defines trust levels for software artifacts. It provides a way to assess the security of software components throughout the entire supply chain from development to deployment. Sigstore is a service that provides encrypted signatures for software artifacts, including SBOMs and SLSA metadata. These signatures can be used to verify the authenticity and integrity of software products throughout the entire supply chain. Together, SBOM, SLSA, and Sigstore can help improve the security and trustworthiness of software supply chains. SBOM provides visibility into components used to build software, SLSA defines trust levels for artifacts, while Sigstore provides a way to verify authenticity and integrity of these artifacts.
